EPA’s pleiotropic mechanisms of action: a narrative review

چکیده

Treatment with icosapent ethyl 4 g/day, a highly purified and stable ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), demonstrated significant reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events death REDUCE-IT. However, analyses REDUCE-IT meta-analyses have suggested that this clinical benefit is greater than can be achieved by triglyceride alone. EPA therefore may additional pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory anti-aggregatory mechanisms. competes arachidonic for cyclooxygenase lipoxygenase, producing metabolites rather the more deleterious associated acid. Changing EPA:arachidonic ratio shift metabolic status from pro-inflammatory/pro-aggregatory to anti-inflammatory/anti-aggregatory. also has antioxidant effects increases synthesis nitric oxide. Incorporation into phospholipid bilayers influences membrane structure help prevent cardiac arrhythmias. Clinically, translate improved vascular health, regression plaque. Overall, range contribute ASCVD.

Mechanisms of Action of Brief Alcohol Interventions Remain Largely Unknown – A Narrative Review

A growing body of evidence has shown the efficacy of brief intervention (BI) for hazardous and harmful alcohol use in primary health care settings. Evidence for efficacy in other settings and effectiveness when implemented at larger scale are disappointing. Indeed, BI comprises varying content; exploring BI content and mechanisms of action may be a promising way to enhance efficacy and effectiv...

Significant numbers of influenza virus particles are present in the respiratory secretions of infected persons, so infection can be transmitted by sneezing and coughing via large particle droplets. The mean duration of influenza v...

Statins: a new insight into their mechanisms of action and consequent pleiotropic effects.

In the recent years, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A(HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors have emerged as the most important class of lipid-lowering agents. Through inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, they restrict the rate-limiting step of cholesterol synthesis resulting in up-regulation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) receptors on the cell membrane and reduction of atherogenic LDL consequences....
